Once a site of dilapidating structures, the backyard and front yard of this multigenerational Bed Stuy home were completely transformed by us at Brooklyn’s Best Handyman and General Construction. Starting off as a challenging site filled with dirt and trash, we successfully converted these spaces into a safe and pleasant setting for its residents, especially for the client’s young son and elderly father.
Our client entrusted us with a budget, which we efficiently used to design and built a beautiful backyard. The entire renovation project cost was significantly lower as compared to the other bids she received, saving her over $10,000.
We erected a 4-foot retaining wall at the backyard, and paved the top portion with bricks and essential parts with 12×12 pavers. A prudent shift of the backyard drain to the middle of the yard ensures no water logging near her house. For the front yard, we chose rectangular bricks. Additional constructions were two new staircases and a quaint deck using pressure treated lumber, PVC handrails, and composite wood planks. We also placed weed prevention material under the paving for long-term maintenance.
The most challenging aspect of this renovation was the extensive excavation required to ensure proper drainage. The site-access through the house led to additional effort in bagging and hand carrying all materials, thereby adding to the labor intensity.
Despite all challenges, this massive undertaking greatly improved the property value by an estimated $60,000. Additionally, it provided a safe and clean area for the family, particularly for the young child to play basketball. For a look into this transformation, check out our video here.
